Report

Whitley Bay III travelled to Morpeth to kick off the 2007-2008 season. Morpeth took early control and dominated the first quarter with a steady and confident start. Some well timed passing and good communication resulted in Morpeth taking the lead early in the first half. Newcomer Charlotte O’Brian scored two impressive goals to put Morpeth in a comfortable position. Whitley Bay responded by making some tactical substitutions and pushing extra players up the pitch. This caused some confusion for the Morpeth defence. Morpeth were forced to battle hard in defence but were still able to create good attacking opportunities at the other end. Beverley Glass secured two more goals for the home side and Julie Fenwick also added to the score line. Morpeth managed to hold off Whitley Bay’s attacking play to keep a clean sheet for the remainder of the first half. Morpeth went into the half time break leading 5 – 0. The second half was a completely different game with Whitley Bay starting to dominate more of the possession. Morpeth struggled to create space leaving little for the forwards to capitalise on. It was Whitley Bay who scored first in the second half with a strong run from the half way line leaving Morpeth vulnerable in defence. Whitley Bay quickly added to their score from a lucky deflection off a Morpeth stick at a short corner. The home side started to regain their composure and created some good goal scoring opportunities. It seemed destined for the home side not to score in the second half until Laura Heaton rejoined the pitch to add another goal to Morpeth’s already healthy total. Carrie MacDonald secured the last goal of the match on her league debut to give Morpeth a 7 – 2 victory. Allison Halliday, another player on her league debut, was awarded ‘man of the match’ for her excellent effort and contribution in the midfield.
